Greater Richmond Chapter Sending ERV, Volunteers to Suffolk

The Greater Richmond Chapter is sending an Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) and two volunteers to the Suffolk area to assist with relief efforts following the tornadoes. The ERV, a mobile feeding unit, can serve up to 1,500 meals a day. It may also be used to distribute supplies (clean-up kits, rakes, garbage bags, toiletries, etc.) that the displaced residents might find helpful.

Thank you to our friends at Channels 8 and 6 for stopping by to talk to us about this!

Red Cross Responds to Virginia Tornadoes

American Red Cross chapters across southern Virginia are responding to the recent devastating tornadoes. The Southside Area Chapter responded to damage in Colonial Heights, and Sussex and Brunswick Counties. They opened a service center in Lawrenceville for displaced residents and fed about 1,500 meals to emergency workers at South Park mall.

To donate to the relief efforts, you may send checks to the Southside Area Chapter at 3267-A South Crater Road, Petersburg, VA, 23805, or call 804-733-5711, or click here to donate online. You may also send checks to the Greater Richmond Chapter at P.O. Box 655, Richmond, VA 23218, or call 804-480-2250, or click here to donate online.

April 27 through May 3 is National Volunteer Week!

"How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world." ~Anne Frank

Every day, our Chapter volunteers embody this year's National Volunteer Week theme: Volunteer to Change the World. Our amazing volunteers are changing the world by helping people who have experienced a house fire, by teaching others how to save a life with CPR, by helping a military family reach their loved one in Iraq, and by driving patients to dialysis appointments. Every day, a client's world is made better through the efforts of our volunteers and we thank them for all that they do!

Prepare for Spring and Summer Activities with Babysitter's Training!

The American Red Cross understands that having the skills and confidence to care for infants and school-age children is extremely important. Combining video, fun activities, hands-on training and discussion for a complete learning experience, Babysitter's Training shows participants how to....

  • respond to emergencies with first aid, rescue breathing and other appropriate care,
  • make decisions under pressure,
  • communicate with parents to learn household rules,
  • recognize safety and hygiene issues,
  • manage young children, and
  • feed, diaper and care for infants.

Participants also receive a Red Cross Babysitter's Training certification card and an easy-to-use workbook that makes a great babysitter's reference tool. The course is designed for children age 11 to 15. It lasts six hours and costs $50.00. For more information, or to register for a class, please click here.

Buford Road Pharmacy Recognized for Outstanding Support

Pictured are Paul Hundley, Red Cross; volunteer Hazel Thomas, R.N., Red Cross; Georgette Carter, Buford Road Pharmacy; Ron Davis, R.Ph., Pharmacy Owner; Fred Weinberg, R.Ph., Buford Road Pharmacy; and volunteer Gigi Vranian, R.N., Red Cross.

Buford Road Pharmacy plays a major role in supporting our disaster relief programs. Many of the people who we help have suffered major losses and Buford Road Pharmacy works closely with our responders, particularly Red Cross nurses, to help with medical care needs. Local disaster victims often lose their asthma nebulizers (devices that deliver medication in to their system), and after hearing this, Buford Road Pharmacy offered the nebulizers (and other medical supplies) at a considerable savings to the Chapter. The Pharmacy was recently recognized with the Good Neighbor Award, which is given to organizations outside of the Red Cross that make significant humanitarian contributions to the community in support of our programs. Thank you, Buford Road Pharmacy for being an excellent example of corporate leadership!
